How We Test
Our testing simulates real households across four core environments: indoor/apartment, balcony/small patio, suburban yard, and homestead/community garden with wildlife pressure. Each scenario includes climate stressors (heat waves, freezes, heavy rain) and different scrap volumes and diets to reflect everyday use.
What We Measure
- Odor control: daily sniff checks and ammonia detection during active phases.
- Pest resistance: observed ingress attempts (fruit flies, rodents, raccoons, bears where applicable) and seal integrity.
- Thermal performance: temperature curves for thermophilic activity and safe composting windows.
- Moisture balance and leachate handling: drainage, absorbents, and “browns” management.
- Ergonomics: assembly time, lift/turn effort, door/lid access, and clean-out.
- Durability: UV exposure, freeze–thaw cycles, rust/corrosion checks, hinge/latch wear, and crack resistance.
- Footprint and capacity: true usable volume vs. claimed specs, plus fit in small spaces.
Protocols and Scoring We standardize feedstock recipes by household type (apartment, family, homestead) and apply seasonal adjustments. We log weekly metrics and troubleshooting steps, then score bins on odor, pests, performance speed, ease of use, durability, compliance potential, and value. Products that underperform get clear caveats or are excluded.
Verification and Compliance Where relevant, we confirm wildlife certifications (e.g., bear-resistant) and cross-check municipal/HOA acceptance or curbside compatibility. We note required accessories (carbon storage, compostable liners, leachate trays) and their impact on total cost of ownership.
Long-Term Follow-Up We revisit picks after 3, 6, and 12 months to validate durability and user-reported outcomes. Significant updates trigger revisions to our guides and recommendations.
